General Membership Meeting

January 31 at 7p.m.

  1. ATTENDEES:

There were 18 parents members in attendance. The Principal, the parent coordinator and the Teacher rep were also in attendance. Quorum established.

  1. CALL TO ORDER

There was no call to order given the president was not there and arrived late. The Principal did a Welcome to all parents and updates instead at 7:05 p.m.

The principal explained:

  1. Our attendance is on a rise and as a school, we are coming up with ways to encourage attendance. As the cases drop we are hopeful in better school attendance.
  2. Student have been very opinionated and have demonstrated lots of self-advocacy in things that they would like to see in the community. Students are currently working on a proposal to have driver’s Ed at Bronxdale.
  3. As of Feb 3rd we will resume collecting phones and will do away with the Yonder initiative which means students will have their phones collected and taking away (locked up safely in a room only administration as the key to). At the end of the day phones will be re-distributed to students.  Yonder has proved to be defective and costly to replace

*Parent Isha Taylor, Title 1 representative advocated for student government so that students have more say in matters like this one.

  • REVIEW OF PAST MINUTES

It was the very first general assembly for this school year so no past minutes at this time.

  1. BYLAWS REVIEW

The board has approved the Bylaws with 3 changes:

  1. An amendment to specifically the dates when PTA is held

As stands currently in Bylaws, the PTA meetings happened after SLT meetings. President Tawana advocated that the meetings be changed to entirely separately meeting dates and times. Ms. Navette, PTA treasurer motion that we vote on the subject matter and this was second by Glenda Rodriguez, assembly member. Majority of the assembly voted that the PTA met on the same date as SLT, in other words, that the clause remain the same Failed to pass in the form of 4 votes in favor, 10 votes against and 4 abstentions.

Currently these dates are (as indicated on SLT)

Feb 28

March 28

April 25

May 23

June 13th the time however, will be established via a survey that asks when it is best for the majority of the PTA assembly to convene.

NOTE: Review the entire Bylaws.

  1. Integration of designee/additional positions for PTA Board

President Tawana proposed that there be designee positions created for the PTA board in case for whichever reason the board members cannot perform their duties their alternates can take over as to not stall business.

SLT representative Sharnise Wingate Johnson proposed that while the positions are necessary they should elected positions; instead of calling them designee, which is a short term Title, there should be a Vice President and two assistants (one to treasury and one to the secretary). Motion to vote was then made by Navette Hunter and was second by Novlet Hyman. Ms. Jojo explained that the first vote would be to have the positions in the first place and the second vote would be what they would be called (designees or VP with assistants).

Majority of the assembly voted that the board have these positions Motion passed in the form of 13 in favors, 1 against and 4 abstentions.

  1. Integration of fundraising languages in the bylaws

Being tha there are no specifics on fundraising, the PTA wanted to include language in the Bylaws which allowed the PTA to pursue funds in various different ways. Sharnise Wingate Johnson, SLT representative said that it would behoove the PTA to introduce a Fundraising committee as a standing committee instead and let them decide on operatives and logistics. President Tawana approved and motion to vote which was second
